India, officially the Republic of India, is a South Asian nation. It is the seventh-largest country by area, the world’s most populous country since 2023, and, since its independence in 1947, it is the largest democracy in the world.

India is a federal union made up of 28 states and 8 union territories, forming a total of 36 subnational entities. These states and union territories are further subdivided into a total of around 800 districts, which are then categorized into administrative subdivisions.
